Art fairs usually provide a space for the very wealthy to invest in some of the most notable contemporary artists. As such, the popular spending trends set a tone for the continuing year. This being the case, Frieze New York has predicted a few new trends this year.
Among some of the booths, common themes were all female artist booths, such as Cheim and Read, whose booth had a pink theme paying tribute to the Women's March. Many booths were focused on protest, and political art, creating discussions, such as London's Maureen Paley Gallery exhibiting works by Wolfgang Timmens, an artist who actively protested against Brexit. Sociopolitical viewpoints were in wide variety throughout the two hundred some galleries and their exhibited artists, signaling a change in order. One in which widespread flux has obviously created emotions, and thus art. Not only were there numerous statement booths, but the installations and performance pieces provided noteworthy frenzy as well. Several Leonardo DiCaprio impersonators were seen walking around the fair in a few of his past famous movie roles including a grizzly man dressed in furs, a manic stockbroker, and a con man in the guise of his pilot's uniform. Commissioned by the fair, artist Dora Budor and curator Cecilia Alemani re-imagined the famed art collector not as he would be normally seen at the fair, but also as a statement against the fact that the fair is only for the wealthy public and should be considered an art event enjoyed by all. Outside of the fair, Anish Kapoor displayed his Descension piece, an endless whirling pool of water, which has been shown around the world. A popular installation piece, that was a must see for viewers. Although Frieze originally opened the fair for a week, this year they slimmed the duration down to the span of a weekend, figuring most visitors only attend one day. In light of it only being a two day event, it is safe to say Frieze New York fulfilled their promised variety, with new themes to watch for throughout the upcoming year.
